Project requirement

A marine operator in Israel needed eight replacement sea chest strainer baskets. The supplied dimensions were 126 mm rim outside diameter, 116 mm body outside diameter and 206 mm overall height, with a 1 mm rim and 1.5 mm perforations. The existing component had corroded, prompting a proposal to use 316 stainless steel.

Engineering question

A replacement basket must seat in the existing housing. The rim, body diameter, height and top/bottom features need to be checked together; matching only the perforation diameter would not establish fit. The change to 316 stainless should be described as a material recommendation for the reported seawater exposure, subject to the customer's operating conditions and approval.

Project status

The eight replacement baskets were delivered after payment and tooling production. In-service corrosion performance is not documented here.

Design review

A marine replacement basket must locate on the existing rim and clear the housing bottom. The 126 mm rim, 116 mm body and 206 mm height are fit-critical together; the 1.5 mm perforations do not establish housing fit. The corrosion of the old basket motivates material review but does not by itself prove a future service life.

Inspection and acceptance

Eight baskets were delivered after tooling. The available case record does not include in-service corrosion or pressure-drop results. A future replacement should confirm the seawater chemistry, original seat, handle and drainage details against the installed equipment.
