Metal wire mesh

Plain, twill, Dutch and reverse-Dutch wire cloth for screening and filter fabrication. Square aperture depends on mesh count and wire diameter; dense Dutch weaves require their own retention and permeability data.

Construction

Square openings and dense filter weaves

  • Square aperturea = 25.4 / N - d, where N is openings per inch and d is wire diameter in mm. With 100 mesh and 0.10 mm wire, a = 0.154 mm.
  • Theoretical open areaFor square weave, open area = 100 × [a / (a + d)]². The 100 mesh example has about 36.8% open area before frames or supports.
  • Dutch and reverse DutchDifferent warp and weft constructions form a tortuous pore path. Do not apply the square-aperture formula. Specify both wire sizes, weave and rating method.

Applications

Choose a weave for the actual separation and fabrication route.

Square-opening screens

Discs, baskets and panels with defined geometric openings.

Fine filter cloth

Dutch weaves for supported discs and cylinders.

Continuous belts

Reverse-Dutch media where tension and tracking accompany filtration.

Measure cloth in both directions

Alloy and mesh count are only part of the identification.

Questions before ordering

Does ISO 9044 cover all filter mesh?

No. Its scope concerns industrial woven wire cloth with square apertures. It is not a blanket performance certification for Dutch weave or complete filter elements.

Is 100 mesh the same as 100 µm?

No. With 0.10 mm wire, 100 openings per inch gives a calculated aperture of 154 µm. A different wire diameter changes the aperture.

Can the same mesh count have different openings?

Yes. Wire diameter changes the clear aperture at a given count. Quote mesh count together with wire diameter or specify the clear opening directly.
