Project requirement
A French industrial filtration customer specified 316L plain-weave wire mesh using several linked requirements: an approximately 2 mm aperture with ±0.2 mm tolerance, at least 56% open area, 0.5–0.7 mm wire, width of at least 1 m and length of at least 2 m. The customer also requested a material certificate, conformity certificate, dimensional inspection record and packing photographs.
Engineering question
Aperture, wire diameter and open area cannot be evaluated as independent labels. For square plain weave, nominal open area follows the relationship `(aperture / (aperture + wire diameter))²`; the proposed mesh should therefore be checked against the minimum open-area requirement using actual measured values and the customer's measurement method. Documentation scope should be agreed before the order is accepted.
Project status
The 316L plain-weave mesh project was delivered. The project requirements provide a useful example of checking aperture, wire diameter and open area together before selecting a woven construction.
Design review
For square weave, open area = 100 × [aperture / (aperture + wire diameter)]². At a 2.0 mm aperture, 0.60 mm wire gives 59.17%, whereas 0.70 mm wire gives 54.87%. At the 1.8 mm lower aperture limit, 0.60 mm wire gives 56.25%. These calculated selection pairs show how the 56% target constrains wire diameter and aperture tolerance together.
Inspection and acceptance
For a new order using this specification, verify aperture and wire diameter on the same woven sample, calculate open area from the measured geometry, and check width and length separately. List the required material certificate, dimensional record and packing photographs in the order documentation.
