Hastelloy alloys for chemical filtration
Compare Hastelloy B-2, B-3, C-22 and C-276 for chemical-duty filters. Reducing-acid service, oxidizing species and chloride exposure guide the choice of nickel-molybdenum or nickel-chromium-molybdenum chemistry.

|---|---|
| Chemical composition | Acids, concentration, chlorides, dissolved metals, oxidizing species and cleaning fluids. |
| Process cycle | Operating and cleaning temperatures, contact time, flow and differential pressure. |
| Filter assembly | Weave, wire diameter, support, welds, interfaces, dimensions and quantity. |
Separate reducing-acid duties from mixed chemical exposure
B-family alloys emphasize nickel-molybdenum chemistry for reducing acids. C-family alloys add substantial chromium to address a wider combination of oxidizing and reducing conditions. For a chemical filter, include the main process medium, dissolved metals, oxidizing contaminants, wash solution and cleaning cycle in one chemistry schedule.
B-3 builds on the nickel-molybdenum family
B-2 and B-3 are different UNS grades. B-3 combines strong resistance to pure reducing acids with improved structural stability compared with B-2 during thermal exposure. Use the exact designation when specifying wire, woven cloth or fabricated parts. The grade identity remains attached to every wetted layer and support.
C-22 and C-276 balance chromium and molybdenum differently
C-22 has higher nominal chromium than C-276, giving it a strong role where oxidizing species accompany corrosive process media. C-276 combines chromium, molybdenum and tungsten for demanding chemical processing and chloride exposure. Both grades are formable and weldable, supporting conversion from metallic media into finished filter assemblies.
Design the joints and cleaning cycle with the media
A chemically resistant filter layer works as part of a complete wetted assembly. Specify the support, frame, end fittings and weld filler along with the cloth. Define seam continuity and sealing surfaces so liquid passes through the intended filtering area. Record cleaning concentration, temperature and contact time as explicit design inputs.

Material selection questions
Are B-2 and B-3 interchangeable names?
B-2 is UNS N10665; B-3 is UNS N10675. B-3 has a distinct composition and improved structural stability. Use the exact grade specified for the component.
How do C-22 and C-276 differ?
C-22 has higher nominal chromium. C-276 has higher nominal molybdenum and tungsten. The balance of reducing acids, oxidizing species and chlorides determines the selection focus.
Why do these tables use nominal composition?
Nominal values describe the alloy design and make the families easy to compare. Maximum and minimum values are marked separately, and the order specifies the applicable material standard.
What is needed for a chemical filter quotation?
Supply the exact alloy, chemical composition and concentration, temperature cycle, flow, differential pressure, media geometry and a drawing of all wetted parts.
