Filter discs and cut screens

Rimmed wire mesh filter discs

The rim captures cut wire ends and holds single or multilayer cloth in position. Define finished rim outside diameter D, clear filtering diameter d, rim section and total stack height. Radial rim width is (D−d)/2. In the D = 100/d = 90 mm layout, the rim occupies 5 mm radially and the clear window is 6362 mm² before mesh open area and support blockage.

A retained edge with a defined filtering window

Metal rims and elastomer-covered edges

Crimped, rolled and welded metal rims provide different retention joints. The drawing identifies the closure, seam and seating face. Rubber or plastic edge coverings are separate constructions with a defined profile, compound and compression. The mesh grade and edge material have separate entries in the bill of materials. A retaining rim holds the screen; the housing seat and gasket establish the fluid seal.

Layer support and finished assembly inspection

Single-layer and 1/3/5-layer configurations specify the filtering weave and each support layer. Inspect rim retention, loose wires, pinched or torn mesh, clear diameter, flatness and thickness after closing the edge. Specify support contact, clamp load, differential-pressure direction and cleaning chemistry for the assembled disc. During servicing, clean the filtering face and rim groove, then restore the original seating orientation.

Mesh material and edge material are separate components

The cloth family includes stainless steel, copper, nickel, Monel and Inconel woven mesh. Specify the alloy grade for each cloth layer. Metal edge strips include stainless steel, copper, galvanized steel, aluminium and low-carbon steel; rubber and plastic coverings form separate perimeter options. The rim material, joint and cleaning chemistry are specified independently of the filtering cloth.

Check the rim against the actual holder

Seat the finished rim on the holder shoulder and identify which face receives the closing load. The supporting contact must lie on the specified rim section while the clear window exposes the filtering cloth. Record the holder opening separately from rim outside diameter so a replacement reproduces both fit and useful screen area.

Inspect the assembled disc after the rim is closed: the cloth remains retained around the perimeter, the seat is flat and loose wire ends are contained. Keep the gasket contact distinct from the retaining fold. During cleaning, inspect the rim groove and the holder seat before returning the disc in its original flow orientation.

Mesh blank cutting

A mesh blank is captured by a metal ring or formed edge. The construction can include a support layer when the filtering cloth is too flexible for the span.

Frequently asked questions

Does the retaining rim provide the seal?

The rim retains the cloth. The mating seat, gasket and clamp define the sealing path and compress the perimeter to its specified installed condition.

How are replacement rimmed discs specified?

Match finished outside diameter, clear diameter, rim profile, total thickness and seating face, then specify the filtering cloth and support sequence.
