Commercially pure nickel for mesh and filter components
Compare Nickel 200 and 201 for woven mesh and chemical-process components, and distinguish N2, N4, N6 and N8 purity designations. Carbon content, impurity control and construction define the material choice.

| Nickel grade | Nickel 200 / N02200, Nickel 201 / N02201 or the specified purity grade and standard. |
|---|---|
| Process chemistry | Caustic concentration, other dissolved species, temperature and cleaning cycle. |
| Screen construction | Woven count and wire diameter, or electroformed aperture, pitch and thickness. |
| Finished dimensions | Width, length or part drawing, supports, electrical connections where used, and quantity. |
Pure nickel has a different role from nickel alloys
Commercially pure nickel combines corrosion resistance in caustic environments with high electrical and thermal conductivity. Nickel 200 and 201 are wrought nickel grades used in chemical and electrical applications. For a woven filter, specify the nickel grade and wire condition alongside mesh count, wire diameter and the finished dimensions.
Carbon distinguishes Nickel 200 from 201
Nickel 201 has a lower carbon maximum than Nickel 200. The low-carbon grade addresses graphite-related embrittlement during elevated-temperature exposure and is the grade used for sustained service above 315°C in the producer’s material guidance. Screen design still specifies the actual temperature cycle, atmosphere, supports and differential pressure.
Woven nickel and electroformed nickel use different manufacturing routes
Woven nickel mesh is made from interlaced wires. Electroformed nickel screens are deposited onto a patterned mandrel, creating a continuous patterned sheet. Specify woven mesh by count, wire diameter and weave. Specify an electroformed screen by aperture, pitch, ligament width and deposited thickness. The material designation follows the actual manufacturing route.
Keep purity systems and grade standards distinct
N2, N4, N6 and N8 identify separate purity grades in the nickel catalog series. Nickel 205 and Nickel 270 are also distinct designations used for specialized purity and electrical requirements. Record the grade, governing standard, impurity limits and supply form together. This gives procurement a precise identity for the metal and a measurable geometry for the screen.

Materials and alloys overviewNickel 200 and 201 grade comparison
The low-carbon designation is central to elevated-temperature material selection.
| Grade | UNS | Carbon maximum, mass % | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nickel 200 | N02200 | 0.15 | General wrought nickel for caustic and electrical applications |
| Nickel 201 | N02201 | 0.02 | Low-carbon wrought nickel for sustained elevated-temperature exposure |
Nickel 200 and 201 composition limits: mass %
The nickel minimum includes cobalt.
| Element | Nickel 200 | Nickel 201 |
|---|---|---|
| Ni + Co | ≥99.0 | ≥99.0 |
| Cu | ≤0.25 | ≤0.25 |
| Fe | ≤0.40 | ≤0.40 |
| Mn | ≤0.35 | ≤0.35 |
| C | ≤0.15 | ≤0.02 |
| Si | ≤0.35 | ≤0.35 |
| S | ≤0.01 | ≤0.01 |
≥ denotes a minimum; ≤ denotes a maximum.
N-series purity grades: mass %
The catalog series distinguishes nickel-plus-cobalt purity and total impurity limits.
| Grade | Ni + Co minimum | Total impurities maximum | Carbon maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| N2 | 99.98 | 0.02 | 0.005 |
| N4 | 99.90 | 0.10 | 0.010 |
| N6 | 99.50 | 0.50 | 0.100 |
| N8 | 99.00 | 1.00 | 0.200 |
Specify the N-series grade and material standard explicitly. Nickel 200 and 201 use their own UNS compositions.
Woven and electroformed nickel screen specifications
The manufacturing route defines the geometric information needed for an enquiry.
| Screen type | Geometry | Functional requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Woven nickel mesh | Count, wire diameter, weave, width and length | Filtration opening, support and finished form |
| Electroformed nickel screen | Aperture, pitch, ligament width and deposited thickness | Pattern uniformity, open area and frame attachment |
| Formed nickel component | Drawing, wall or wire dimensions, seams and fittings | Wetted surface, load path and dimensional fit |
Material selection questions
What does commercially pure nickel mean here?
Nickel 200 and 201 have a minimum combined nickel-plus-cobalt content of 99.0%, with controlled limits for other elements. The composition table gives the individual limits.
Why choose Nickel 201 for elevated-temperature exposure?
Its lower carbon content addresses graphite precipitation and the associated embrittlement during prolonged heating. Specify the full thermal cycle and the component geometry with the grade.
Is N6 simply another name for Nickel 200?
N6 and Nickel 200 have separate composition definitions. Specify the required grade and standard, including carbon and impurity limits, so the delivered material has an unambiguous identity.
Is electroformed nickel screen the same as woven nickel mesh?
Woven mesh uses interlaced wires. Electroformed screen uses deposited metal to create a patterned sheet. Their aperture geometry, thickness and manufacturing specifications are different.
